Agile & Web Development

This presentation was put together by Glennette Clark. She spoke on this topic a NoVA Girl Geek Dinner #4 and I for one, found it very interesting.

NoVA Girl Geek Dinner #4 Was So Fun!

A little late, but we had NoVA Girl Geek #4, which was also our one year anniversary last month and had such a great time.

I want to thank everyone who came out, It was nice seeing familiar faces and meeting new people.

A special thanks to Melanie (@sisarina on twitter) who heads up the #DCTwirlies, #DCTweetup and #DCTwixr events; for hipping me to Nando’s Peri Peri. It is such a great location to hold events like our girl geek dinners AND their food is seriously yummy.

An extra special thanks to Glennette Clark (@glennette) of Lazy Smart | UX and Jen Consalvo (@Noreaster) of Shiny Heart Ventures for speaking.

We are planning NoVA Girl Geek #5, the last girl geek dinner for 2009, so stay tuned for more details on that. If you’d like to speak/present at this dinner, please send us an email or a DM on Twitter.

She’s Geeky #4 is coming to Northern Virginia

*INVITATION*

She’s Geeky is coming to Northern Virginia - the DC Area.
April 18th McLean Virginia (Tyson’s Corner).
http://www.shesgeeky.org/
Early bird admission is $40 until April 1 - $45 regular until April 11 and $50 after that.
Student admission is $20

We are inviting women from a divers range of industries together for a day of interactive learning and industry cross pollination.

To us Geekiness is self defined - from those with advanced degrees in mathematics, science and engineering. To skilled programmers who are in large enterprises, government or startups. To women who have taught themselves how to code the PHP on their side bars on their blog or just super enthusiastic users of technology.

Each city has a different mix of technologies - DC has a variety of fields
* the nonprofit and advocacy sectors,
* government, defense, aerospace, and intelligence
* Web portals - like AOL
* startups innovating

The range of topics discussed is diverse - in California you can see the list of sessions.

*How does the unconference day work?*

The sessions are put forward by the women who attend the event - and are diverse. They include expert topics about their particular expertise, hosting conversations about issues of interest both technical and personal (like how to balance work and family), exploring start-up ideas, introductions or deep dives to different programming languages or frameworks, sharing stories about what it was like to work in the early days of the industry, introduction to public speaking and many others.

Beginning at 9 AM each day, we start with a blank wall and, in less than an hour, through a highly participative process, create a full day, multi-track conference agenda that is relevant and inspiring to everyone there.

From there, we go to separate areas or rooms assigned to each topic. The session can be a presentation, inquiry about a question or discussion about an issue or technical field. or. One participant volunteers to record the proceedings.

The notes from each session are collected in the newsroom, then a book is compiled with all the notes from the conference and distributed to everyone who attended.

Sponsorship opportunities for both small and large companies are available too.

2nd Nova Girl Geek Dinner - Another Success

The second Northern Virginia Girl Geek Dinner on December 17, 2008 was another roaring success. Over 20 women braved the cold and winter holiday rush to attend a wonderful talk and discussion led by Julie Lerman, http://www.thedatafarm.com. Everyone shared their thoughts on professionalism in the work place, what makes women special in a technology field, and future focuses for WIT. Thank you to Julie for making the trip down from Vermont to share her experiences!

Many thanks also go to Viget Labs, http://www.viget.com, for hosting us at their office in Falls Church. It is a pleasure to work with such helpful and accommodating people who are interested in helping out the developer community.

Our next dinner will be in March or April. We look forward to seeing you there!

NoVA Girl Geek Dinner #2

We would like to invite all women who are in technology fields or consider themselves a “girl geek” to attend an evening to meet, socialize, and network with women in technology. Men are invited if accompanied by a Girl Geek. Appetizers and beverages will be provided.

Date: December 17, 2008
Time: 7:00pm-9:00pm
Location:
Viget Labs
400 S. Maple Avenue, Suite 200
Falls Church, VA 22046

Presentation: Defining the -ette in Geekette
Twenty years ago, Julie Lerman learned that she had to act and dress like the guys in order to fit into the IT Industry. Today she’s found that the cover-up is no longer necessary. Many of her “girly” qualities have become advantageous in a world of geeks where she now speaks at conferences all over the world and has just finished writing her first programming book for O’Reilly Press. Julie will share with the NOVA Girl Geeks some of this historical perspective and lessons learned.

Presented by: Julie Lerman
Julie Lerman is an independent consultant and .NET Mentor who has been designing and writing software applications for more than 20 years and is the author of O’Reilly’s Programming Entity Framework . Julie is well known in the .NET community as a Microsoft MVP, ASPInsider and INETA Speaker. She is a prolific blogger, a frequent presenter at technical conferences around the world and writes articles for many well-known technical publications. Julie lives in Vermont where she runs the Vermont.NET User Group, is a board member of the Vermont Software Developers Alliance and a member of the Champlain College Software Engineering Advisory Board. You can read Julie’s blog at http://www.thedatafarm.com/blog.

Presentation: It’s Not My Job
The creators of computing technology are mostly white men, and that is a problem. Women in computing and out of computing, and society as a whole, suffer because of this problem. Even as growing numbers of people and organizations work toward a solution, too many continue to abdicate responsibility. What will it take to bring gender balance to computing?

Presented by: Dr. Joanne McGrath Cohoon
Dr. Joanne McGrath Cohoon holds positions as Senior Research Scientist at the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and as Assistant Professor of Science, Technology, and Society at the University of Virginia. With funding from the National Science Foundation, the Computing Research Association, NCWIT, and the Sloan Foundation, Cohoon uses perspectives and methods from sociology to conduct nationwide studies of recruitment and retention in computing. Her results are reported in scholarly journals and an award-winning book, co-edited with William Aspray, from MIT Press – Women and Information Technology, Research on Underrepresentation.
